Monsoon-season hacks for a comfortable night under canvas in the hills.

Sri Lanka's wet zone — the central highlands and southwestern slopes — receives some of the highest rainfall in Asia. If you're camping here outside the dry months, preparation makes the difference between a miserable night and a cosy adventure.

Tent selection — Double-wall tents with a full bathtub floor are non-negotiable in the wet zone. Avoid single-skin shelters or tent designs with large mesh panels — condensation and rain will defeat you.

Sleeping bag choice — Down bags lose their insulation when wet; synthetic fill retains warmth even damp. In the wet zone highlands, a 3-season synthetic bag rated to 5°C is ideal.

Ground moisture — Even inside a tent, ground moisture seeps up. A closed-cell foam mat under your sleeping mat makes a significant difference.

Clothing layers — Wool and synthetic base layers only. Cotton kills in wet conditions — it stays cold and damp against your skin. A merino wool base layer is worth every rupee.

Camp placement — Camp on high ground, never in drainage channels or gullies. Even a gentle slope helps water run away from your tent.

Morning routine — If it rained overnight, break camp methodically. Pack sleeping bag first (inside dry), then tent last. Wipe tent exterior before packing.

We always check the seven-day forecast before any camping departure and carry weather contingencies for every trip.
